Where Was 1883 Filmed?

The series was shot in Texas and Montana. Filming started in August 2021 in Texas and finished up in Montana in January 2022. At the 1883 filming locations, many of the actors had a problem with the unbearably hot temperatures of Texas and the severely cold temperatures in Montana.

The Story of 1883

The 1883 TV series is actually a prequel to the Yellowstone TV series. The story follows the Dutton family post-Civil war as they leave Tennessee and head to Fort Worth, Texas. The story follows them to Montana where they eventually settle and come to own the land that would become the Yellowstone Ranch. The final episode of the 10-part series was aired at the end of February 2022.

But don’t be disheartened by the short lifespan of 1883. Paramount released some good news about the series.

The Cast

The cast includes Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, James Landry Hebert, and Eric Nelsen.

There were also a few guest appearances that included Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Billy Bob Thornton, Dawn Olivieri, and Graham Green.

The Director

Taylor Sheridan wrote the series and directed the first episode. The subsequent episodes were directed by Christina Alexandra Voros and Ben Richardson.

Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the show, makes a guest appearance as Charlie, a rancher who hunts cattle thieves.

Taylor Sheridan stressed the importance of authenticity so women were asked not to shave their underarms or legs. The women were happy to accommodate this request!

Rotten Tomatoes received 27 reviews and reported an 89% approval rating. It seems that Sam Elliott may have had a lot to do with this.

1883 didn’t receive any awards but received three nominations  from the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score).

The nominees were Ben Richardson, Christina Alexandra, Brian Tyler, and Breton Vivian.
