How to merge clips in Premiere Pro

To merge clips in Premiere Pro, there are a few things to undertake to ensure that the process of merging clips in Premiere Pro is seamless. 

Here are the steps to undertake to allow you to merge clips smoothly at the highest quality, let’s jump straight into it. 

Create a sequence 

You will have already imported your footage already into Premiere Pro and that will sit within the Project Panel – so the first step is to create a sequence.

Simply go to the Project Panel and select the New Item menu and select Sequence.

Now the sequence is created, it’s time to drag and drop the two clips you wish to combine in Premiere Pro. 

Add another clip to the sequence.

Now select another clip and drag it onto the “New Item” button, creating another sequence. Simply drag and drop your original sequence onto your newly created sequence.

This will create a nested Sequence. A nested sequence can be edited and updated across all sequences, making it much more efficient and easier to make large changes.

How to merge audio with video in Premiere Pro

Merging audio with video in Premiere Pro is an important process to understand. It may be important, but it’s pretty easy to master. 

To merge audio with video in Premiere Pro, follow these simple steps. 

  • Firstly select the video clip and then click Ctrl (Shift for Windows) to select the audio clips that will be merged. 
  • Now use the “Merge Clips” command. Do this by selecting Clip > Merge Clips.

  • Now you can select your preferred settings and click “OK”.

Top Tip: To merge audio and video, you can do the same in the Project Panel by dragging the required clips and dropping them onto your Timeline.

Why can I not merge clips in Premiere Pro?

Is the Merge Clips box greyed out?  If the Merge Clips box is still greyed out, ensure you have imported the video and audio files into the Project Window.

If not, you will be accessing them through the open folders that point to stored files. Once you’ve added them to the Project Window, you’ll be able to use the Merge Clips function.
